Constructed in 1872, this 117‑foot‑tall iron‑clad beacon guided mariners into Galveston Bay for 61 years, until its light was extinguished in 1933. Remarkably, during the Galveston hurricane of 1900, the lighthouse sheltered 125 people, many fleeing waist-deep storm surge; in 1915, it protected 61 more during winds hitting about 126 mph.
